Lyon Exchange Residency

In February (2020) I took part in an exchange residency in Lyon, France. The week-long residency took place as an exchange between a group 10 artists from Goldsmiths, London, sharing skills, collectively devising workshops and performances with 10 artists from National School Fine Arts De Lyon. The time we spent together culminated in a group show, exhibiting the work made during the residency.

Echoed conversation; a brutal austerity psychodrama is a site-specific sound piece was made in collaboration between two recordings situated in Le Corbusier’s Lyon monastery; one, a recording of the discussion that was set up in conversation between the exchange group and a modernist monk and lecturer The group conversation was set up as an interview, with Zoe (Lyon school of art) as a mediator and translator, and challenger, between the artist group as a whole and the monk; and the second, a spatial acoustic recording of the modernist chapel, which is used to channel a discourse around psychogeographic negotiations of landscapes and architecture in exploring the political potentials of sound through close listening. By merging these two bodies of feedback, the site-specific with a focus on conversation, intertwined with translation, and repetition in different forms, the language of information becomes a kind of simulation of the physical echo recording in the chapel room. The conversation then extends and becomes more fluid, spilling out into small groups as we drift through the rooms, either side of the discussion recording picking up separated small group conversation around the room of the chapel, in reaction to the discussion before.
